Florida home insurance: what does it really cost you?
Enter your premium (or a quote) and see the monthly cost, how it compares with your area, and what changes such as a higher hurricane deductible or a wind mitigation discount could mean.
Ways Floridians lower their premium
- Wind mitigation inspection: a licensed inspector documents roof shape, roof-to-wall connections and storm protection. Insurers must offer discounts for qualifying features.
- Roof age: many insurers price heavily on the roof. A newer roof can open up more insurers and lower prices.
- Hurricane deductible: a higher percentage deductible lowers the premium but means paying more yourself after a storm.
- Shop around: an independent agent can compare several insurers, including Citizens if private cover isn't available.

Common questions
Why is home insurance so expensive in Florida?
Hurricane risk, the cost of rebuilding, claims and lawsuits, and the cost insurers pay for their own backup cover (reinsurance) all feed into Florida premiums. Prices vary a lot by area, the age and build of the home, and the roof.
How can I lower my premium?
Common ways are a wind mitigation inspection (it can earn discounts for roof shape, roof attachment and storm protection), a newer roof, a higher hurricane deductible, bundling policies, and getting several quotes through an independent agent. The exact savings come from your insurer's quote.
Do I need flood insurance?
It's required by lenders in high-risk flood zones, and standard homeowners policies don't cover flooding. Many Floridians outside those zones buy it too, because a large share of flood claims come from lower-risk areas.
Why doesn't this calculator quote me a price?
Only an insurer can quote a premium for a specific home. This tool helps you understand your premium, test "what if" changes from your quotes, and see what it means for your monthly payment.
